You choose a perfume by feeling, not by season—and yet there are fragrances you will always reach for during the winter months.

When fog drifts through city streets and fingertips fidget inside gloves, you wish your perfume could pierce the cold and summon the sun—offering a soft, comforting warmth. Sometimes, it’s about creating a fragrant bubble that follows you through space like a kind of magical protection. Perhaps—just perhaps—to call someone a little closer.
We’ve selected some winter fragrances we love this season.

“BOOZY” FRAGRANCES: LIKE A SIP OF FINE COGNAC THAT AWAKENS THE SPIRIT

That sensation when warmth spreads through the body, the mood lifts, and the murmur grows—we easily associate it with a sip of fine cognac, patiently aged for years in oak barrels, accumulating flavor and energy. It’s precisely that feeling a great winter fragrance can evoke.

We don’t have to search far to discover an entire spectrum of tempting offerings in a crystal glass: the house of Kilian presents The Liquors collection. Fragrances with cognac notes rooted in the family tradition of the Hennessy family—of which the brand’s founder is a member—arrive in Angel’s Share, or in a variation of cognac paired with intriguing notes of pineapple and cardamom in Apple Brandy on the Rocks. From the same house comes the celebrated Black Phantom, featuring Irish coffee enriched with rum. We shouldn’t overlook the charm of Dandy by Penhaligon’s, with its vintage whisky accord wrapped in woody cedar and oak notes, or Baraonda, with the intoxicating call of alcoholic vapors from the intriguing Italian brand Nasomatto.

GOURMAND FRAGRANCES: SWEETNESS THAT WARMS THE SOUL

Dusted with powdered sugar, sweetened with honey, drizzled with caramel, splashed with mulled wine… Winter craves calories, which we can safely—diet-wise—find in gourmand fragrances. We long for tonka and vanilla notes on a sandalwood base, indulging in treats that recall childhood days.

Let’s begin with BDK Velvet Tonka: it’s like sitting in an oriental pastry shop, where the scent of cakes mingles with tobacco drifting from the neighboring table. Continue to a dessert table filled with pistachios dusted with vanilla from DS & Durga, then move on to a cup of fragrant cocoa with a hint of rum through Cacao Porcelana. Vanilla? Always. Try a cloud of airy, irresistible Madagascan vanilla.

SMOKY FRAGRANCES: THERE IS FIRE, SOMEWHERE

To fully evoke that coveted winter experience—hearth or fireplace and company gathered somewhere in the mountains—we turn to BeauFort London, our first association with smoke, and Vi et Aramis, described as an “alchemical Christmas party” of smoke and whisky, black tobacco, spices, and opium. On the same exciting, dark side is Black Afgano, inspired by opium fumes, followed by a slightly calmer yet deeper option: Comme des Garçons Black, smoky, with pepper and incense.

Somewhere between gourmand and smoky lies Chambre Secrète by Reservation, with incense, vanilla, and spices. Less wild, more sophisticated—featuring smoke, incense, tobacco, resins, and spices—is Amouage Royal Tobacco, a masterful composition full of extremes.

FLORAL AND SPICY FRAGRANCES: SUMMONING THE SUN

Call forth the moment when you rest your face on your hand and let yourself be intoxicated by the scent of sun-warmed skin and the hum of the beach—because that’s where Sunkissed Goddess takes you, with ylang-ylang, tiare, and coconut.

Perhaps you dream of escaping to warmer lands? What’s warmer than the desert? Alula leads you there—to an oasis city where palms rise and spices, tobacco, and resins scent the air. To the other side of the world, yet still into desert heat, Tuscan takes you—floral, spicy, and intoxicating. Less scorching but more rhythmic, the magic of Africa is evoked by Bal d’Afrique, so hard to resist.

And yet, the fragrance that is a pure metaphor for the sun is Amouage Sunshine, with its lavish, sun-drenched floral bouquet.

OUD FRAGRANCES: THE SPIRIT OF THE ORIENT

Agarwood—noble and precious, a gift of the Orient with its dark, smoky tone—is a true winter choice. For oud, we travel to the Sultanate of Oman, from where Amouage brings us Silver Oud: passionate, powerful, and deep, wrapped in patchouli and vanilla. To experience this ingredient in its full glory, try the pure perfume oil Amouage Oud Ulya. Created in the West yet still deeply mystical, Oud for Greatness is simply a must if you love oud.

If you crave softer oud variations, seek a juicy, fruity interpretation in Oud Maracujá, floral opulence in Oud Satin Mood, and an elegant, airy take in Roja Amber Aoud Crystal.

FAIRYTALE WINTER: COCOONED AND WHISPERING

There are also fragrances that are soft and velvety, murmuring winter lullabies, tucking our dreams into plush musky pillows and clouds of iris. Like a story yet to be written in L’Eau Papier. Like the refined, airy delicacy of Parisian Musc.

Give us more of these sophisticated winter fragrances! Here they are: Thé Noir 29 with dried figs, tea leaves, and hay; L’Eau d’Hiver, as comforting as a winter evening with a book; Reflection Woman, opulent yet quieter than most Amouage fragrances—like a delicate watercolor.
