The Spirit of Avant-Garde That Endures
The queen of anti-fashion from Japan, designer Rei Kawakubo, launched the fashion brand Comme des Garçons in 1969. She broke conventions, introduced deconstruction and asymmetry as part of her vision, and attracted a specific audience that wanted creations resembling conceptual art objects rather than clothing.
When she launched her perfume line under the same name in 1994, this avant-garde spirit was reflected in the bottles, with their unique, now iconic pebble-like shape. The only deviations from this shape are perfumes created in collaboration with other brands or special perfume series. The famous Incense series, with its five perfumes, invites a spiritual journey around the world, while the Red series features perfumes created with notes of red flowers, red fruits, or spices.
Perfumer Mark Buxton created the first perfumes: unisex, subtle fragrances marked by unconventional and often surprising notes and compositions, atypical for the traditionally French perfumes of the time.
- Stimulate all five senses, shake perception, provoke amazement – this is the guiding principle of the brand even today.
Rei Kawakubo brought something new and bold to the fashion and art scene through every aspect of her creative work. Her inexhaustible creativity, fearless and curious spirit, make the launch of every new Comme des Garçons perfume a unique fashion and even cultural event.
