Founded in 1960 in the artistic bustle of the Saint-Germain district in Paris, Diptyque is the creator of unique olfactory stories that ignite the imagination.
The history of this iconic brand began with the opening of a studio by three multimedia artists and friends, passionate travelers: Desmond Knox-Leet, Christiane Montadre-Gautrot, and Yves Coueslant. The studio quickly transformed into a curiosity shop with an eclectic collection of artworks, redesigned everyday items, and exotic items brought from their numerous travels around the world. Two symmetrical windows inspired the brand's name: Diptyque.
The first three scented candles were created in 1963, followed by their first unisex Eau de Toilette simply named: "L’Eau". The glass packaging first featured an oval frame with playful black letters, now a globally recognizable brand hallmark. The fame of Diptyque candles grew slowly but steadily, surpassing the Saint-Germain district, Paris, and France. A legend was born.
Today, the brand carefully preserves its heritage. The scents of perfumes and candles are continually inspired by travel, nature, and art. Each new fragrance is accompanied by collaborations with contemporary artists who design the visual identity in the spirit of the founding concept.
