All That Magical Realism
In modern perfumery, it’s rare for anything to truly surprise us, no matter how hard perfumers try to add unexpected twists to their creations. That is, until perfumes from Argentina appear, presenting our saturated senses with the uncharted territories of Patagonia, tempting our receptors with the scent of plants we’ve never even heard of, and celebrating the cultural heritage of "magical realism."
The brand Fueguia 1833 from Buenos Aires is the work of Julián Bedel, an Argentine artist, musician, and designer.
Every year, Bedel embarks on a research expedition to places where adventure is still possible, searching for rare plants, and collaborating with local researchers and cultivators who sustainably collect plant materials. He develops new technologies for soaking, filtering, aging, or distilling new ingredients.
He founded the Fueguia Botany Center for Botanical Research in Uruguay, which includes a plantation with more than a hundred aromatic plants native to South America and a fully equipped laboratory for extracting exotic ingredients yet unknown to the perfume world. The extraction process is done at low temperatures using CO2 technology, without the use of solvents harmful to the environment.
Once the perfume is ready, the crystal bottles are filled and packed by hand. Each one is unique, as it carries the spirit of a particular season.
The brand took its name, Fueguia 1833, from the encounter between Charles Darwin and a girl from Tierra del Fuego named Fuegia Basket in 1833, which was significant for his seminal work, On the Origin of Species.
And just as Darwin brought his discoveries of Patagonian plants to the Western world, Julián Bedel presents us with his rich perfumed herbarium through the most magical of all senses: the sense of smell.
