Modern Since Victorian Times
Penhaligon's fragrant adventure began with William Penhaligon, a witty and enterprising barber from Piccadilly. Inspired by the intense aromas of the nearby Turkish bath, he created his first perfume in 1872, Hammam Bouquet, a luxurious oriental creation. Drawing inspiration from British culture and magical moments that captivated him, this spirit remains at the heart of the brand today.
Penhaligon soon became the official perfumer and barber to Queen Victoria’s court, with the British nobility falling in love with his perfumes. The royal warrants, granted to those closely associated with the court, have been a hallmark of the brand throughout its history. The latest "royal" perfume was created in collaboration with the Prince of Wales (now King Charles III), Highgrove Bouquet, inspired by his private residence, Highgrove Palace.
Penhaligon’s fragrances are designed and crafted in England using the finest ingredients, created by top global perfumers. Today’s simple yet elegant bottle design, adorned with a bow around the spray nozzle, harks back to the original design established by the brand’s founder. The only exception is the Portraits collection, which offers fragrant portraits of various imaginary figures from British aristocracy and public life.
These perfumes carry a quintessentially British spirit, infused with humor and irony.
